Fontaines D.C. and Rosalía Find Common Ground on ‘Where Is Gone?’

Fontaines D.C. have spent much of their career resisting the limits of the genre that first made their name. Now the Dublin band have taken another unexpected turn, releasing “Where Is Gone?”, a collaboration with Rosalía that places two distinctive musical voices in the same song just days before their fifth album arrives.

The track was released on October 12 and will appear on Dopamine Chamber, due October 16 through XL Recordings. Produced by James Ford, the new album follows 2024’s Romance, the record that helped push Fontaines D.C. from celebrated alternative act toward a much larger international audience.

An Irish post-punk group working with a Spanish singer known for crossing flamenco, electronic pop and experimental music might initially look like a surprising combination. Yet the connection runs deeper than a bid for crossover attention. Guitarist Carlos O’Connell grew up with both Irish and Spanish cultural influences and has pointed to Rosalía’s interest in keeping Spanish musical traditions alive as something he recognizes in his own band’s approach to Irish identity.

That shared attitude is a more interesting starting point than questions of genre. Fontaines D.C. emerged with songs that sounded inseparable from their Dublin origins, but they have never seemed particularly interested in preserving one musical formula. Dogrel was taut and urgent, Skinty Fia was darker and more expansive, and Romance pushed toward theatrical scale and uneasy atmosphere.

Rosalía’s own work has similarly questioned the idea that cultural inheritance and experimentation must be opposites. Her recordings have regularly drawn from traditions while reimagining their setting. The pairing therefore suggests two artists approaching a similar question from different directions: how far can a sound travel without losing the qualities that made it personal in the first place?

“Where Is Gone?” is the third track shared ahead of the album and marks the first featured artist collaboration on a Fontaines D.C. studio album. Official release materials describe it as a sweeping duet, with Grian Chatten and Rosalía singing together over an orchestral arrangement. That description also points to an increasingly broad sonic palette for a band once routinely described in the shorthand of post-punk.

The larger album is presented as another change of direction. James Ford’s production credits span alternative and electronic music, and the group have described the record in terms of emotional volatility, pleasure and unease. But predicting an entire album from promotional descriptions would miss the point: the meaningful news is that Fontaines D.C. are still prepared to alter the sound—and perhaps the expectations—attached to their name.

For Modern Unrest readers, the collaboration also has a wider resonance. Alternative music has a long history of becoming most interesting when artists step outside the scenes that initially defined them. The question is not whether a Rosalía feature makes Fontaines D.C. less authentic; it is what the two artists can bring out in one another.

“Where Is Gone?” is out now. Fontaines D.C.’s Dopamine Chamber is scheduled for release October 16, 2026, via XL Recordings.
